While people around the world celebrating 10.10.10 with shout outs on their Facebook and Twitter, my house mates and I were waiting for...
...this.
Yeah this is the latest Ubuntu release after 10.04 Lucid Lynx, codenamed Maverick Meerkat. It's my second time upgrading Ubuntu since my first intro to the OS last year. The first try out was Karmic Koala (9.10), mainly due to my curiosity towards the idea of open source as I was using Windows for more than 20 years (been pirating ever since). Karmic Koala doesn't seem to satisfy me much as I was more into games so changing OS wasn't a great idea.
So what's new in this update?
- Ubuntu One (online storage) is now easy with folder synchronizing. Every Ubuntu user gets 2GB storage for free, although you can purchase a larger one if you need more space, but with current Malaysia line, I don't think that's necessary.
- In the previous version Lucid Lynx, Ubuntu introduces a light OS for netbook users which satisfy the tiny screen quite well. Gotta try the Meerkat Netbook edition later.
One feature that I like the most in Ubuntu is the homescreens. Here are my 4 homescreen shots:
Main homescreen, I use this one mostly for surfing.
Second one, only for music player. iTunes like.
Third is for social media. Twitter, Facebook and IMs.
Lastly is for e-mail.
We can have more homescreens but having 4 is enough for me. Once you get used to this idea, you'll find Windows messy. Believe me.
Ubuntu is free for all, just visit ubuntu.com to download the OS. Is not big either, I think most of their OS are 700MB in size. They will release new version two times a year, that's a pretty well-maintained service to me. Virus? Rarely found in Ubuntu. What do you think?
P/S: I didn't dump Windows entirely, I still have it as my secondary OS.
