Mayors of Starbucks now get discounts nationwide with Foursquare.
Totally an awesome sales marketing for internet geeks I’d say. But what is Foursquare?
“Foursquare is a location-based social networking website, software for mobile devices, and also a game. Foursquare is a web and mobile application that allows registered users to connect with friends and update their location. Points are awarded for "checking in" at venues. Users can choose to have their Twitter and/or their Facebook accounts updated when they check in.”

So basically it’s like telling or bragging to friends about our whereabouts. Haha that’s from my point of view la ☺. The users will gain badges/rankings according to their updates: the more they update, the higher rank they gain. We can outcast other players’ rank from time to time and that’s something to be bragged among the users. From what I’ve seen, Foursquare is mainly being used by iPhone, Blackberry and Android users. I do have an account but I never use it as I don’t own any of the smartphones.
Malaysia’s mobile internet plan is so expensive (to me), and I still think DiGi should reduce their Smart Plan subscription. Low income teenagers like me are the one using Facebook and Twitter most of the time, orang tua yang berduit tak main kot benda² camtu, so why come with the expensive price?
What’s being offered by Starbucks will definitely pull users to their branches. I don’t know if the discounts are available here in Malaysia as I’m neither a Starbucks fan nor Foursquare but the idea should be followed by other cafes or shops to promote their brands. Win-win situation I’d say.
